This thing is KILLING me. It’s perfect and I want it. The quad headlight version (pre 1987) is my favorite; I think they suit the angular styling of the fox Mustang. The pre-facelift headlights are the right kind of ugly, whereas the blobs they were replaced with just look like an awkward modernization to me. Furthermore, I hatchback foxes are my preference. The notchback, like the facelift blob headlights, is in my opinion the wrong kind of ugly.

Kinja'd!!!

Moving on, I’m really into the color. Loud Ferrari red cars will never be my style but I do like maroon. It’s such a rich and inviting color. I even like the black portion of the hood too, that was a factory option back in the day. The chunky wheels are also nice, and they look like they’re in great condition.

Kinja'd!!!

Of course, it’s a manual. Automatic muscle cars are sad. And as you’d expect from a car with only 65,000 miles on the clock, the interior is looking great. The pre-facelift dashboard is also a plus as far as I’m concerned. It hails from the era of American automotive interior design when nobody bothered to style anything, so all dashboards were simple rectangles with circular gauges in them. While that’s technically a bad thing, I enjoy the simplicity of the design. The interior it was replaced with is nicer and undeniably more modern, but I don’t want that. I want to laugh at the fact that my coupe’s interior is more pickup truck than sports car.

Kinja'd!!!

Fox Mustangs aren’t the fastest cars. This one had 210 horsepower and 270 ft lbs of torque when it was new. That’s nothing by today’s standards; you can buy a Hyundai Sonata with more power than that. But just like my old 635csi, enjoying this old beast isn’t dependent on how fast you can go. If you’re riding in or driving a classic car, and you’re worried about how slow it is, you’re missing the point.

Kinja'd!!!

Fuck airbags, fuel economy, and crash test ratings. I miss driving a time capsule around. I’m addicted to it. I like driving a safe and relatively modern car, but I’ll always miss that sensation. It’s pure bliss. Buying an old BMW as a first car wasn’t the most responsible thing to do, but I had a ton of fun and now I know why some people are obsessed with the classics.

When you’re driving down a nice road on a sunny day, with nobody else around, you’re transported back to the era that car was born in. All of your senses are thrown back in time. There’s the aroma of old leather, or well-aged vintage fabric. Maybe a hint of gas too, and always healthy portion of rich smelling exhaust. Everything you touch is old. The wheel, the gear lever, the HVAC controls - when you use them, you’re experiencing a different era. I still remember the way the headlight pull knob felt in my old BMW; the solid thump as you pulled it out, and the soft click when you pushed it back in. Of course sounds are important too. That’s the major complaint we all have with modern engines. They’re efficient but they’re also pretty boring and quiet. Old motors snarl and crackle like nothing else.

Kinja'd!!!

When I was a teenager, I had a job waiting tables. There was a Fox Mustang just like this one parked outside one day. I laughed at it and wondered who owned it. It was so silly - the garish nineties paint, the dorky headlights, the white top, and the luggage rack. I figured a balding, pot-bellied, middle aged man wearing flip flops would trudge out of the restaurant and plop down into the driver’s seat. I was wrong. It belonged to a gorgeous, fashionably dressed woman, probably in her mid-thirties. She sauntered out of the restaurant, hopped into the car enthusiastically, and started it up. The old 302 roared to life, she took off, and I was hooked. I finally understood the fox body. It’s not that old yet, but it still makes a statement. It’s a brash American caricature of a car with a loud V8 and terrible handling. It’s ugly as sin and a clean example is a total anachronism on today’s roads.

So I really hope someone buys this thing soon, I’ve been staring at this ad for weeks, and it’s killing me. I KNOW deals like this won’t exist when I finally have a garage of my own...

STAHP! Now I want the 85 too. Clean and cheap for a fox. It’s too damn far away though.

Mmmm them quad headlights.

That interior looks super clean as well, and the price is great.

This is a fair point, it’s clean as hell.

Still, I love the fox too but I would find something more unique for this cash.

I’d argue that a clean Fox is pretty unique! Not a rattle can black, cherry bomb exhaust, death trap - but a clean one. I never see nice ones anymore. Though I see your point - there are still plenty of interesting old things out there for around 5k, most of which are a little more unusual.

This is high, but I’ve seen a lot of Foxes creeping into 5 digit territory if they’re nice.

My friend has an ‘85 GT convertible. Same red outside, white interior IIRC. Awesome car.

I mean, I get that and I appreciate that it’s not messed with, this just isn’t that kind of car to me (emphasis on to me). My sister had a notchback 85 in this color, unfortunately it was a 4 cylinder (no, not the fun turbo one).

And btw, Muscle Cars can be plenty of fun with an auto. I bring back the Montego as an example. It’s not like I went out seeking an automatic muscle car, but it was a great deal on a cool car so I grabbed it.

Oh and I can rip the tires whenever I want without a clutch, and it’ll even spin em going into 2nd if I want it to.

Yeah auto gearboxes can be fun, my Q45 is essentially an old (and not very fast) muscle car - it’ll definitely burn the tires in second with t/c off!

You probably don’t miss non-powered drum brakes though haha.

I can turn the TC off in the 07 Milan and rip em surprisingly well too though.

I actually haven’t had any issues with stopping the Montego, even in “slam on the brakes mode” for a kid running out in front of it.

It’s not stopping like a super car or a sports car, but it’s perfectly fine at stopping for what it is.

At least it has power steering.

Can confirm: They’re tons of fun.

Sure, the horsepower sounds low, but all the power comes in right off of idle, so you can go from puttering around a parking lot to screaming tires in just a prod of a throttle. Sure, they’re not the best handling cars, but they make you feel like a driving god when you get it right, even though you’re likely going slowish.

I still think a Fox 5.0 is a great driver’s car. It’s stats won’t impress anyone online, its looks are dated (but quite simple in a way that hasn’t been done since), but damn if it doesn’t make you laugh maniacally when you flog it.

I seriously can’t believe that Fox is only 5K. Here in Texas that buys you some project someone just gave up on. I can’t tell you how bad I wanted a foxbody when looking for my first car, especially an 85-86. That is perfect from the mileage to the price. I looked and looked but everything was beat up. Now the rest of my evening will be spent on Craigslist looking for more, thanks!
